ABSTRACT Historical rainfall records are relevant in hydrometeorological studies because they provide information on the spatial features, frequency, and amount of precipitated water in a specific place, therefore, it is essential to make an adequate estimation of missing data. This study evaluated four methods for estimating missing monthly rainfall data at 46-gauge stations in southwestern Colombia covering 1983-2019. The performance of the Normal Ratio (NR), Principal Components Regression (PCR), Principal Least Square Regression (PLSR), and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) methods were compared using three standardized error metrics: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Percent BIAS (PBIAS), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The results generally showed a better performance of the nonlinear ANN method. Regarding the linear methods, the best performance was registered by the PLSR, followed by the PCR. The results suggest the applicability of the ANN method in regions with a low density of stations and a high percentage of missing data, such as southwestern Colombia.

RESUMO Os registros históricos de precipitação são relevantes para os estudos hidrometeorológicos porque fornecem informações sobre as características espaciais, frequência e volume de precipitação de água em um local específico, portanto, é essencial realizar uma estimativa adequada dos dados faltantes. Esta pesquisa avaliou quatro métodos para estimativa de dados de precipitação faltantes mensalmente em 46 estações de medição no sudoeste da Colômbia, abrangendo os anos de 1983 à 2019. O desempenho dos métodos de Razão Normal (NR), Regressão de Componentes Principais (PCR), Regressão por Mínimos Quadrados Principais (RMQP) e Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA) foram comparados usando três métricas padronizadas para os erros: Raiz do Erro Médio Quadrático (REMQ), Percentagem BIAS (PBIAS) e Erro Absoluto Médio (EMA). Os resultados com frequência mostraram um melhor desempenho do método ANN não-linear. Com relação aos métodos lineares, o melhor desempenho foi registrado pelo PLSR, seguido pelo PCR. Os resultados sugerem a aplicabilidade do método ANN em regiões com baixa densidade de estações de medição e alta porcentagem de dados faltantes, como o sudoeste da Colômbia.

Abstract The knowledge of rainfall regimes is a relevant requirement for many activities such as water resources planning, risk management, agriculture activities management, and other hydrologic applications. The present study has consisted of validating four techniques (one linear, one non-linear, and two hybrids) that allow identifying homogenous regions. We take the monthly rainfall in the Southwestern Colombia (Nariño), an area of 33,268 km2 characterized by complex topography and local factors that can influence the rainfall behavior, to test all techniques. The results showed overall the best performance for the approach related to non-linear principal component analysis and self-organizing map. However, in all mainly prevail two regions: the Andean Region and Pacific Region with a bimodal and unimodal regime, respectively. The bimodal one dominates over the Andes mountains range and the unimodal one the coastal zone. The application of non-linear approaches provided a better understanding of the seasonality of rainfall, and the results may be useful for water resource management.

Abstract The Colombian Biogeographic Choco (CBC) and the La Plata Basin (LPB) are regions with high biodiversity. However, these areas are characterized by scarce climatological information, complex orography, and rain-gauge network unevenly distributed. Interpolated data from the ground station might overcome these aspects. For this reason, is necessary to identify the best technique for the spatial interpolation of rainfall. Hence, the spatial interpolation techniques were applied to annual and seasonal rainfall in the CBC and LPB. Geostatistical results and deterministic approaches were compared by cross-validation. Cokriging with spherical (gaussian) model is the best interpolator in the CBC (LPB), as indicated by the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) and a standardized RMSE close to one. The CBC shows three rainfall cores: the northern, 9,000 mm/year; the central-southern, 10,000 mm/year; and the southern, 7,000 mm/year. The LPB shows a west-east rainfall gradient, with a minimum to the west (450 mm/year) and a maximum in the mid-west (2,000 mm/year). To the north of the LPB, rainfall reaches 1,500 mm/year, while in the south it reaches only 900 mm/year. The results in our study may be useful for scientists and decision-makers for use in environmental and hydrological models for the CBC and the LPB.

En la etapa de sedimentación en canales del proceso de extracción de almidón de yuca se genera alrededor del 80% del total del agua residual del proceso. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo realizar la modelación teórica de la separación de las partículas no retenidas en los canales de sedimentación, basándose en el análisis de sedimentación de partículas discretas entre 2 y 8 µm y usando el principio de la Ley de Stockes. La modelación teórica mostró que la velocidad de sedimentación oscila entre 0,007 y 0,112 cm/min. Con este rango de velocidad y un caudal crítico de 1,5 L/s, para la remoción total de las partículas se requeriría una estructura con un área superficial de 1.288 m2, altura de 1 m y TRH de 10 días aproximadamente. Este estudio demuestra que no es económica ni técnicamente viable la sedimentación convencional ni la de alta tasa para la retención de estas partículas, siendo recomendable evaluar mecanismos diferentes para mejorar la eficiencia de separación de las mismas que pueda potencializar su aprovechamiento y evitar contaminar los cuerpos receptores de estos efluentes.

On the settling stage in channels of the extraction process of the cassava starch, is generated around 80% of the total wastewater from the process. On this study, we analyze the theoreticalmodeling of the particles that are not retained in the channels basing on theanalyses of settling of discrete particles with sizes between 2 and 8 microns, using the Stockes Law. The theoretical modeling showed that the sedimentation rate is between 0,007 and 0,112 cm/min. With this rate range and a critical flow rate of 1,5 L/s, for the total removal of the particles, it is required a structure with a surface area of 1288 m2, height of 1 m and approximately 10 days. This study shows that is not economically or technically feasible the conventional nor high settling to retain this type of particles, being advisable to evaluate different mechanisms to improve the separation efficiency of particles that may potentiate their use and to avoid the contamination of the receiving bodies of these effluents.

Na fase de sedimentação em canais do processo de extração de amido de mandioca, é produzido perto de 80% do total das águas residuárias do processo. Neste estudo, foi realizada a modelagem teórica da separaçãodas partículas não retidas nos canais de sedimentação de partículas discretas entre 2 e 8 µm; usando o princípio de Lei de Stockes. A modelagem teórica mostrou que a velocidade de sedimentação varia entre 0,007 y 0, 112 cm/min. Nesta faixa de velocidade e uma vazão crítica de 1,5 L/s, para a remoção total das partículas seria requerida uma estrutura com uma área superficial de 1.288 m2, altura de 1 m e TRH de 10 dias aproximadamente. Este estudo mostra que não é econômica nem tecnicamente viável a sedimentação convencional nem de alta taxa para a retenção destas partículas, sendo recomendável avaliar mecanismos diferentes para melhorar a eficiência de separação das partículas que possa potenciar o seu aproveitamento e evitar contaminar os corpos de água que recebem estas águas residuárias.
